How long to cycle the filter?

Postby skip » Sun Feb 11, 2007 10:32 pm

The electric went out about six days ago. Trouble is it was for about six hours, so the bactiera in the filter have died.

i'm closely monitoring the ammonia ect, also doing a small water changes everyother day, using ammolock and reduced feeding amounts.

However the ammonia level has now gone off the scale and i'm concerned as to how long it will take the filter to start sorting it self out.

The fish seem to be blissfully unaware of the situation and are carring out thier daily rountines :)

Any help, thoughts or reassurance from those more experienced than me is very welcome.

Pete.

Personally bud I'd do a 50% water change and watch the levels. That may just be my ham-fisted approach to it but I'd throw this over to the other guys just to get their ideas on this too.

Hi Skip ,welcome to the forums.
Sorry for the slow response I've been down with flu and didnt feel dripping snot on my key board

From what you've posted you seem to be doing all the right things and theres nothing I can really add except dont panic .
Things should balance out in a couple of weeks because not all of the bacteria in your system would have died it just needs to repopulate.

Chin up

Happy to report that the levels are slowly returning to realistic levels without any fishy funerals.
