This evening we had a great Quiz Given by John Egan from Port Talbot Fish Club. Lots of old and new fish facts were aired and discussed.

This evening we had a great talk on breeding ancistrus catfish, our very own member Bob Marklew presented a brief history of Ancistrus with lots of interesting facts and some great practical tips on keeping, breeding and rearing these fish, from years of his own experiences! 

Do not miss the L number talk he is giving in May, it should be a belter.

We welcomed our first speaker of the year to the club. Alan Cavil gave a fantastic talk on how to make an energy efficient fish house, discussing all the materials available and lots and hints and tips he has learned along the way.

Once again our Annual General Meeting features in the calendar, we try to get through this at a fair pace so we have chance to discuss other fish topics BUT it is an important meeting. We need volunteers to help run the club for next year and new faces on the committee usually result in new ideas for the club. Well Done Dai - he has managed to get Dave Macallister to give us a talk on the livebearer Brachyrhaphis. Dave is a very experienced fish-keeper and has been breeding live-bearers for many years. He often walks away from our show with more award cards than most of us dream of - essentially this is one NOT to miss (although I will unfortunately have to miss it due to a family wedding). This talk was originally planned for July so you are not seeing double! Peter Anderson - New Tropical, marine and pond products. Peter Anderson is chairman of Hounslow AS and he works at Cheney Aquatics. Apparently he uses this position to “grab” new products from suppliers and gives an interesting talk about them and demonstrates them without getting them wet, so to speak. A change in plan - Peter Anderson was going to give us a talk tonight but this has been postponed until August.  This evening will Ivan will be giving us a presentation on his trip to America.  I am guessing at the content but I assume it will include lots of info and pictures on the fish clubs / shows he visited in the USA together with his work with the Fish Ark in Mexico.

Ian Fuller - Corydoras breeding.  Ian gave us a very interesting and detailed talk on Corydoras C numbers back in August 2005.  He is back this time to tell us about how to breed these little favourites among fish-keepers.  If you particularly enjoy your Corys then save up your pennies as Ian has a wonderfully illustrated book which he sells for around £25 - this is a definite one for the bookshelf !

Ivan Dibble - Goodieds my way.  Ivan is one of our own club members and is a wealth of knowledge on livebearers.  He has set up and run the "Fish Ark" project to collect and breed endangered livebearers from Mexico.

John Egan is leading a talk on Central American Cichlids this evening.  We have several members that keep and breed Cichlids and it is one subject are that you can never have too much information.  I have attended several talks from John Egan and they are always informative and entertaining - make sure you don't miss this one!

As always the December meeting is the club's American Supper evening.  It is a very informal occasion where anyone is welcome to come along to chat among themselves about anything and everything (although fish topics are usually on the agenda for many).  As the title suggests you are asked to bring along enough food for yourself and this is pooled on a table for everyone to help themselves - with any luck we will have a good selection and not a table full of salmon sandwiches!

This month is our Annual General Meeting.  Traditionally this is never well attended as I am sure people are worried about being pressurised into doing a job they don't want to.  Let me assure people that there is never any pressure and that it is vitally important to attend and give your input on who you think would be the best people to run the club for the next year.  Hopefully this years meeting can have an even greater attendance than last year (which was a record turn-out I believe!)

Charley Grimes is speaking to us tonight about Diving in Mexico's Natural Aquarium.  Although we have had several talks about diving this is the first one to cover tropical fresh water and is based on the lakes of Cuatro Ciénegas in Mexico.  As I understand it, these are 4 marshes that are fed by thermal springs originating in the Sierra San Marcos mountains.

Dr David Price is a lecturer in genetics at the University of Plymouth.  He is also a leading authority on catfish and will be presenting the very broad topic of "catfish" to us this evening.  Given these shy little (well often large actually) fish are a favourite among fish keepers this should be an interesting talk for us all.

Members Evening - No doubt we will have the usual barrage of questions and answers regarding all areas of fish-keeping; this is one meeting where it is possible to learn an incredible amount in only a few hours.

Since this meeting is only a few days before our Show we will be dedicating up to about 15 minutes on final preparations.  Everybody's help is needed to minimise the workload for everyone so please turn up and offer your services.

Brian Walsh - Wood carving and a mixed bag on fish.  Brian has a reputation in our club of being one of the best speakers we have ever had.  His presentations use a combination of sounds, music and slides all synchronised to perfection - I'd suggest arriving early as this will hopefully be a very crowded room on this evening.

Unfortunately Monty Ray's talk on Dwarf Cichlids has had to be postponed.  However, we have another American visitor - Richard or Rit Forcier as he prefers to be known.  He is Chairman of both the Northeast American and National Livebearer organisations but is giving us a talk on the Coral and Marine fish of the Caribbean.  I have been told that he spend most holidays in this area diving and has put together an excellent programme.

It is with regret that I have to inform you that our speaker booked for this evening will be unable to come as he is unwell.  However Bob Cashin is still here with us for a few more days and does have with him another short program on plants which he is prepared to do for us. Also he has in his past talks at the club made brief references to the fish family "Anobleps" and these seemed to have aroused some interest. Well these references were taken from another 45 minute talk he gives on that subject so he is going to give us both these talks tonight.

Note this talk is now cancelled Jim Griffiths - Tropical Aquaria plants.  I am unsure as to whether this evening's talk will be about the varieties of aquarium plants, the growth of them or a general overview.  Either way this should make an interesting evening covering a topic in which very few people have success.

Bob Cashin - Livebearers. Bob is an American on holiday in Bristol for a couple of months.  From his short talk in January it is apparent he has a good knowledge of this topic and this should be a very interesting insight into a VERY large topic.

The first meeting of 2005 was a success (in my opinion).  I, John Williams, gave a 15 minute talk on carbon dioxide and this provoked lots of discussion about growing aquarium plants in general with several people giving details of their own experiences of carbon dioxide.

Ivan Dibble's visitor from the USA, Bob Cashin, also gave us a 15 minute talk on the four-eyed Livebearer Anobleps - this was a fascinating topic and well presented by Bob who has an obvious enthusiasm and depth of knowledge of this fish.  I look forward to his talk next month on Livebearers in general.

American Supper Evening.  This meeting is traditionally attended by many members and their partners and is an informal chat among ourselves whilst munching away at whatever has been brought along.  Bring yourself, a partner if you wish and enough food to feed yourself.  This food will be added to the table and everyone helps themselves to anything and everything...... a fun evening to round of the year.

Unfortunately, due to illness, Don Kenwood was unable to give us his talk on Livebearers and this talk has been rescheduled for later in the year.  In its place we had a visit from Barry Jones who gave us lots of information on the awarding of points for show fish - this was very informative for those of us still mystified by the process of deciding which fish is better that another at a show.

Thursday July 19th 2003:

Club meeting with speaker Dick Mills discussing public aquariums around the world.  This speaker usually attracts a good attendance within the club and non-members are, as usual, welcome.  Dick has kindly offered to present this meeting after our planned speaker, John Rundle, had to postpone due to family health reasons and our substitute speaker, Brian Chittenden (planned speaker for September) was admitted to hospital for heart bypass surgery.  Our best wishes are with these two for a speedy recovery.
